Volunteer Training Revamped
Mollie Hicks, Volunteer Engagement Specialist

Last week, we held our first volunteer training using an updated and improved format. The night went really well and I think volunteers appreciated the new information and tips. Read more about how and why we updated volunteer training:

  • One new element we included in the training is sharing statistics about Indiana girls to help volunteers further understand and put into context the challenges girls face today. This also demonstrates the relevance of the Girls Inc. program they will lead for girls.
  • Next, as requested through our volunteer survey, we’ve added more emphasis on classroom management and potential scenarios that volunteers may encounter in their program as well as tips on how to effectively handle them. With this additional emphasis, I think volunteers will feel more confident leading their program.
  • Finally, our staff updated the Girls Inc. Media Literacy® program to include recent changes in technology and social communication as well as the “who” currently in the media, i.e. Hannah Montana, Justin Bieber etc.

If you are a current volunteer and completed training prior to last week, don’t fret! We will be hosting a “refresher training” on July 14 from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. for volunteers who would like to get the new training information. Attendees will also receive a new and updated volunteer handbook. Look for your invitation on Friday, June 25!

Another training that I am really excited about is our “Social Media Training” on Wednesday, June 22 from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. At this training, volunteers and others can learn about how Girls Inc. uses social media to share our mission and how you can connect with and help Girls Inc. by using your own social networks to promote your participation with the organization. I am always so proud and excited when a volunteer shares their experience leading a program on Facebook or their blog. It shows me they are enjoying their time volunteering and are making an impact that is worth sharing about!

If you have any questions about either training or are interested in attending, please contact me at 317-522-2608 or mhicks@girlsincindy.org. I look forward to seeing you at training!
