How Do You Feel Appreciated?
Mollie Hicks, Volunteer Engagement Specialist

Volunteer Appreciation month is coming up in April. As I was brainstorming ideas of how to thank our volunteers this year I thought, “Why not ask volunteers how they would like to be thanked?” We want to make sure our volunteers know how much we value their time and hard work. I know I sound like a broken record, but without our volunteers, our programs could not reach the 2,622 girls we served last year. By nature, our volunteers are all busy people, so I’m even more impressed that they still find the time to help inspire girls to do great things. This is my first year thanking our volunteers during Volunteer Appreciation month so I want to do it right!

This is a shout out to current and former volunteers, volunteers at other organizations, and our readers who have out-of-the-box ideas about how we can demonstrate our appreciation. What can we do to show our volunteers their value and impact on our community? How would you like to be thanked for your service? How have you felt appreciated by organizations in the past?

I love the girl photo idea! Also, I really appreciated the handwritten thank you note from staff & the copy of the girl feedback form. That personal touch means more to me than any gift or lunch or awards. However, I would definitely come to something if there was a speaker or an event where we could meet other Girls Inc volunteers! One of my favorite parts of the program is getting to know a new partner each time. I've met some very interesting people & always look forward to meeting more.

I agree that working with the girls is enough of a reward. Also, I like the idea of as much money as possible going to the programs instead of to gifts/activities to benefit us volunteers.

Mollie, I just went to Bright Ideas in Broadripple's (http://www.bright-ideas.org/) awesome trade show this morning and am brimming with ideas (and free samples and catalogues to share of course) that we might use to thank our awesome volunteers. I like the photo idea. I saw lots of great photo frames this morning that made me think of that as well.

I love the idea of the photo of the girls in our program! I'd also like to see some of the comments that our girls made regarding the program, showing what they learned and how they grew.

Working with the girls is rewarding in itself. The opportunity to engage with fellow volunteers who obviously have the same interest and care for our city would be cool : )

One place I volunteered thanked me with a photo of the people that benefitted from my service. It was a nice reminder that the hours I volunteered actually helped someone!
