Gift of Giving Back
Abri Hochstetler, Public Relations Coordinator

Was it just me, or did holiday decorations go up even earlier this year? Regardless of the start, the season is in full-swing and it’s nearly impossible to avoid the toy advertisements and Santa wish-lists, even if you don’t have kids. With hesitation of sounding like Scrooge, I have to admit I easily get overwhelmed with the inward focus emphasized in ads and shopping malls. I’m refreshed though, when I see another theme pushing through the greedy haze. In addition to the gift-giving and over eating that accompany this time of year, the messages and moments of generosity and charity that permeate the season give me hope.

Some may call this the “Christmas spirit” and many Christmas specials portray its power, yet despite the cheesiness potential, I think it’s an important lesson to pass on to ever-observant children. This year, in addition to dropping a few dollars into the Salvation Army buckets while shopping, spend a day with the girl in your life volunteering or shopping for families in need in our community. Here are a few places to get your ideas rolling:

  • If you have an animal lover, consider volunteering at the Humane Society of Indianapolis. You can volunteer as a family or brainstorm a service project to help animals without homes. Their Parent & Me Days give students at least eight years of age and a parent the opportunity to volunteer their time and love the animals.
  • Soup kitchens and food banks see an increase in supplies during the holidays.  In addition to making a donation, learn more about volunteering at Gleaners or Second Helpings, or create a plan to donate food items in slower times of the year.
  • The winter chill is a strong reminder of the need for proper clothing for many Central Indiana families. Organize a clothing drive with your girl for Goodwill’s Collect & Connect program.
  • Many families aren’t thinking about gifts this year, but basic necessities. Shop instead for wish lists for organizations that rely on in-kind donations such as the Julian Center or Coburn Place. As always, please call before delivering donations.

Consider starting with an organization that you and your girl can volunteer with year round as the needs of our community are greater than the holiday season. The seeds of philanthropy we sow in girls will continue to benefit our community for years to come. What other organizations or activities would you recommend?
