How often do you acknowledge the abilities and proficiency of your body? In our media culture, especially as a woman, it’s easy to point out the negatives or things we would change about our bodies. In an effort to reverse this destructive trend, girls at Girls Inc. summer camp instead focused on the positives during the Redefining Beauty program.
During one activity, girls, ages 9-14, wrote thank you notes to different parts of themselves, expressing appreciation for all of the wonderful things their bodies are capable of doing. If you attended our Touchstone Awards last week, maybe you posted your own positive body thought on the girls’ Redefining Beauty exhibit.
Read the messages below to see how girls affirmed their bodies! What ability are you thankful for?
Redefining Beauty builds self-esteem and self-confidence in girls by confronting body image stereotypes and identifying healthy lifestyle habits. Activities in this program encourage girls to distinguish between unrealistic and realistic images of women in the media, and affirm their own beauty, inside and out.
