United Way of Central Indiana
Girls Inc. of Greater Indianapolis is honored to be a United Way of Central Indiana agency. UWCI is committed to sustaining human services for those in need, while reducing such needs for future generations. United Way of Central Indiana provides a significant amount of financial support to Girls Inc. each year. This funding helps us continue to deliver programs that equip girls with the skills they need to develop into healthy, educated, and independent young women.
In addition to our annual grant, UWCI recently awarded us a grant to cover an unexpected maintenance issue at our facility. As the temperature dropped in late November, we quickly discovered we had no heat in one wing of the building. Faced with a costly bill to replace two of our HVAC units, we applied to the UWCI Facilities Maintenance Fund and received an emergency grant to cover 75% of the repair costs.
Beyond its important financial support for local nonprofits, UWCI leads programs and initiatives that strengthen our community. Its Volunteer Center is instrumental in mobilizing volunteers to meet pressing needs in the community. We are pleased to have volunteers from the HoosierCorps program, a federal and state funded program coordinated by UWCI. Hoosier Corps helps working families who have lost their jobs and fallen behind on their mortgages keep their homes. In exchange for volunteering with a local organization, they receive financial assistance with their mortgage. As an organization that relies on volunteers to achieve our mission, HoosierCorps is a perfect fit for us and we are so pleased that UWCI selected us as a host site.
We are grateful to United Way of Central Indiana for its leadership in our community and efforts to help organizations like ours create a brighter future for our youth.
USA Funds
Our Smart College and Career Planning programs equip greater Indianapolis girls with the skills and resources to become economically self-sufficient young women. In Lunch Bunch, girls spend one hour eating lunch with professional women who act as career mentors. These mentors help girls set goals for their future by discussing a variety of careers, obstacles girls may encounter while pursuing a career, ways to overcome these obstacles, and the education girls will need to achieve in order to pursue their goals. During a recent Lunch Bunch, girls had the opportunity to interact with Marion Superior Court Judge Rebekah Pierson-Treacy. They were excited to meet a female judge and it sparked their interest in the legal field. In addition to discussing her own career path, Judge Pierson-Treacy engaged the girls in an activity to identify their personal career aspirations and offered practical advice for how they might achieve them.
Smart College and Career Planning programs are made possible in part by a $50,000 grant from USA Funds. USA Funds is committed to enhancing postsecondary education preparedness, access and success, especially for youth and adults who face barriers to obtaining a higher education. Their generous support will enable us to promote financial literacy, college planning, and career exploration opportunities for more than 1,000 girls! Additionally, USA Fund employees are encouraged to volunteer their time and talents in the community. Employee Catherine Kenealy, an eLearning Developer, recently completed 40 hours of service facilitating Girls Inc. programs and preparing volunteer materials. USA Funds will reward her extraordinary commitment by donating an additional $1,000 to Girls Inc.
Thank you to USA Funds for helping us educate and empower girls in our community since 2003!
